Dating Stories: Texting is the New Phone Call

I remember when I first started dating again, one of the first guys that contacted me via my online dating profile asked me, "Do you text?" I thought that to be a silly question...mainly because up until that point, no I really hadn't texted anyone (yes, loser.) I didn't even have texting as an option on my cell phone plan (I know, laugh all you want!) But what I've found to be certain for guy after guy I've dated is that they aren't asking me for my cell to actually call me, they are asking to text me.

I was slightly baffled by this at first because if you are holding your phone in your hands and sending me a message and we are going back and forth for 20 minutes, why not just dial my number and actually verbally communicate with me? Maybe it's just me and my love of a guy's voice...then again I have opted out of a few dates simply because the guy had an "old man" kind of voice...oops.

That's when I started to realize that texting was the new phone call, or really, the new warm up to the phone call. It's a little less intimidating and gives you some time to think, to be funny, flirty and playful...but of course there are some pitfalls involved in texting. In fact, I have to sadly admit I fell into many of those pitfalls (ie. I am that girl that texts back right away all giddy like a schoolgirl.) Thankfully I read my fellow dating blogger, MasterDater's, book on The Art of Texting, so at least now I am not so yippie skippie when a guy texts me. Also? Try saying MasterDater 10 times fast. I double dog dare you.

Guys do you use texting as just another tool in your dating arsenal? Ladies, are you like me and prefer a phone call instead?

Oh god that was fucking funny!
I could only make it to 5 times.
Thanks for the plug! Getting great feedback from Nando on the book. =)

Can't stand all the texting rules. Just text back, stop all the games - all the things that go through your head when you're waiting for a reply. hy do that to each other if you like someone?
Nice post.

Mike, you're welcome. I expect a lot more ass kissing in the future. ;)

plentymorefish, I agree. Who cares if I text back right away instead of 10 minutes later? There was one guy who literally would only reply once an hour. How can you have a conversation like that? Ack!

I'm a big believer in the phone call, so I try to be completely unreliable when it comes to responding to text messages from a man. Sometimes I'll reply an hour later, sometimes I won't reply at all... I'll never accept a date via text message and always suggest that he call me to arrange the date. And guess what: works like a charm!

While I think the occasional text from a guy is cute, and shows he's thinking of you, I'm certainly not going to make it that easy for him to get my attention.

Oh I like that Princess T. I don't mind the occasional I'm thinking of you text, but not texting replacing the phone conversation.
